The Roots of Oregon Statehood
Champoeg is considered the cradle of Oregon statehood. In 1843, against the backdrop of towering trees and the meandering Willamette River, pioneers gathered at Champoeg to make a historic decision. Beneath the shade of an iconic oak tree, Oregon’s first provisional government was established here through a community vote.
This pivotal moment in history paved the way for Oregon’s path to statehood. Today, Champoeg State Heritage Area preserves this significant site, allowing visitors to step into the past and witness the very spot where democracy took root in the Pacific Northwest.
